In our annual Easter musical offering, we perform James MacMillan’s powerful Seven Last Words from the Cross. This spellbinding and expressive work for choir and string orchestra conveys Christ’s final utterances, combined with other liturgical texts. MacMillan (b. 1959) is considered the pre-eminent Scottish composer of his generation.
This will be complemented by selected movements from Lamentations of Jeremiah by Thomas Tallis.

Canticum Chamber Choir presents the iconic Renaissance masterwork Spem in Alium – Tallis' famed 40-part motet, written for eight five-part choirs, which bathes the listener in awe-inspiring waves of sound and motion. Other works (Vaughan-Williams, Whitacre, Kreek, Tormis, Grieg and others) from throughout the ages will complement this glorious aural experience, including a setting of the Ubi Caritas by former choir member and composer Joseph Twist, and the beautiful Only the Light by current choir member, rehearsal pianist and organist Phillip Gearing.

You are cordially invited to make a voluntary contribution if you wish during the concert to the Community Spirit Foundation (previously the Cathy Freeman Foundation), a charity that delivers a suite of education programs in the classroom and community, with around 1,600 indigenous students, building confidence, teaching goal setting and increasing resilience through education.
Afterwards, join us for sunset drinks overlooking the river. Proceeds from drinks sales go to St Mary's Anglican Church.
