In our annual Good Friday Musical Meditation, we perform James MacMillan’s powerful Seven Last Words from the Cross. This spellbinding and expressive work for choir and string orchestra conveys Christ’s final utterances, combined with other liturgical texts. MacMillan (b. 1959) is considered the pre-eminent Scottish composer of his generation.
Hopes of Heaven - a wish for peace in our time
Sunday 1 July, 2.30pm
St Johns Cathedral, Ann Street
In this centenary year commemorating the end of World War I, Canticum presents a programme of emotion-laden works, including Brisbane-based composer Phillip Gearing’s Pro Patria Mori — a compelling choral cycle using texts of eminent soldier poets from the Great War. Works by Eric Whitacre (When David Heard), Healey Willan’s soaring An apostrophe to the Heavenly Hosts, as well as works by Grieg and Pärt will transport the listener through darkness into light.
Fire and Fantasy
Sunday 4 November, 2.30pm
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 369 Given Terrace, Paddington
Canticum presents music of passion and fancy in this varied programme, and is particularly delighted to perform Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Romancero Gitano with acclaimed guitarist Karin Schaupp. Imaginative works by Pizzetti and Hindemith, and excerpts from Swiss composer Frank Martin’s Mass for double choir complete this programme, offering music of unique composers and poets, many of whom worked in exile. Be taken on a journey of emotional intensity and evocative musical colour.
