Again this year we invite you to join us at St John’s Cathedral for Nocturnes, presented each Friday evening during Lent. Thirty minutes of reflective music performed in the still of the cathedral, followed by the beautiful brief sung service of Compline.

For centuries, Good Friday has been marked by some of the most expressive choral music ever written. Canticum will perform music spanning five centuries, including powerful works by Francis Poulenc (the Four Motets for a Time of Penitence), as well as works by great Scandinavian composers Knut Nystedt, Ola Gjeilo and Ludvig Norman, the UK’s Jonathan Harvey, and Spanish Renaissance master Tomás Luis de Victoria.

This programme of works by Australian and American composers will explore themes of beauty, longing, place and remembrance. Canticum will present Capricornia (written for them by Brisbane-based Gerard Brophy), and the Queensland premiere of Phillip Gearing's choral cycle Pro Patria Mori in memory of the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. Great American composer Samuel Barber’s much-loved Agnus Dei and Sure on this Shining Night will also feature, as well as works by countrymen Randall Thompsonand Morten Lauridsen. Repertoire:

In Kaleidoscope, four of Brisbane’s outstanding choral ensembles will delight audiences with a diverse and inspiring programme in a stunning setting. The festival presents leading composers of the last one hundred years beside some of the exciting unknowns. Further details are available at www.bccmf.org.
Reflections: Music of Arvo Pärt & J.S. Bach

Around the world in 2015, musicians are celebrating the 80th birthday of one of the most performed contemporary composers, Arvo Pärt. Canticum will perform his mesmerising works I am the True Vine, Woman with the Alabaster Box and the haunting Seven Magnificat Antiphons. Forming connections between these works will be some of J.S. Bach’s timeless motets. The sound worlds of these two spiritual composers could not be further apart, but paired, they will provide a unique musical reflection.

Join us for our traditional yet innovative service of Christmas Lessons and Carols, with scripture, poetry, carols and plenty of community singing! This occasion always fills the church, so come early and enjoy (from 5:00 pm) the pre-service recital of seasonal music by organist Christopher Wrench. Join us afterwards for refreshments overlooking Brisbane at sunset, to see out the year of music-making and celebrate the Christmas season.
