On Friday evenings in Lent, the Cathedral will be open at 9:00 pm for 30 minutes of sublime reflective music, followed by a service of Compline, the liturgy for the close of the day. Canticum Chamber Choir will sing selected repertoire from our Good Friday Musical Meditation.

Canticum continues its tradition of delving into the wealth of powerful music composed for one of the most significant days in the Christian calendar. The Good Friday Musical Meditation, to be offered in the stunning acoustic of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rosalie, will feature the Renaissance masterpiece Lamentations of Jeremiah by Thomas Tallis, as well as moving works by Gesualdo, Haydn, Olsson and Bárdos.

In this, the opening concert of the 4MBS Festival of Classics, we perform the significant role of the Semi-Chorus in Elgar's masterwork The Dream of Gerontius. We will join Brisbane Chorale, Brisbane Symphony Orchestra and a stellar line-up of soloists: David Hamilton (tenor), Georgia Hawes-White (mezzo soprano) and David Wakeham (baritone), all conducted by Emily Cox, for this incredibly beautiful musical journey.

This concert is dedicated to the memory and legacy of the great Sir John Tavener, who died in late 2013, and whose music has been formative in Canticum‘s evolution as an ensemble. Ikon of Light, composed for choir and string trio, is one of his most captivating works. The unusually late starting time of the concert (8:30 pm) will enhance the ethereal and meditative nature of the music. The concert will begin with a number of evocative works by local Australian composers.

Join us for our traditional, yet innovative, service of Christmas Lessons and Carols, with scripture, poetry, prose, carols and plenty of community singing! This occasion always fills the church, so come early to secure a seat and enjoy (from 5:00 pm) the pre-service recital of seasonal music by organist Christopher Wrench. Join us outside afterwards for refreshments overlooking Brisbane at sunset, to see out the year of music-making.
