Peace on Earth
Sunday 25 November 2001 6:00 pm
Old Museum Concert Hall, Gregory Terrace, Brisbane
Concert 3 in the 2001 Subscription Series
Music, food and companionship go together well. The audience joined us, with organist Christopher Wrench, for this feast saluting three great composers. Chichester Psalms, with its bold statements of peace and unity, was performed with Bernstein's arrangement for organ, harp and percussion. Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb is a whimsical poem celebrating music and the gift of life. The concert concluded with Schoenberg's monumental work, Friede auf Erden, for a capella choir, a virtuosic paean to peace on earth.
Audience and choir alike brought a picnic dinner to enjoy during the one hour interval on the grounds of the historic Old Museum, then ushered in the holiday season by raising their voices with the mighty pipe organ.
