1999 Concert Programme
Good Friday Musical Meditation
Friday 2 April 1999
St John's Cathedral, Ann St, Brisbane
Our annual Good Friday Musical Meditation is a tradition in Brisbane's Holy Week celebrations and in its musical calendar. Each year, we present a programme of sublime and spiritually relevant choral music. Our centrepiece this Good Friday is Domenico Scarlatti's 10-part Stabat Mater. The ethereal O crux by Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt and the arresting O Domine by Thomas Jennefeldt are special highlights.

Peacable Kingdom
Sunday 11 July 1999
St Stephen's Cathedral, Elizabeth Street, Brisbane
Concert 2 in the 1999 Subscription Series
Randall Thompson's Peaceable Kingdom is one of the masterpieces of mid-20th century choral music from the USA. It was composed for the Harvard Glee Club in 1948, based on texts from Isaiah. Peaceable Kingdom is famous for its emotional range, with a vivid dramatic contrast between apocalyptic vision and the tenderness and joy of spiritual reconciliation. In contrast, Francis Poulenc's Figure Humaine is based on the freedom poems of Paul Elouard, inspired by World War II. Both are works very much for our own time.
