Klop Organ Appeal

Klop OrganFor Canticum to move forward in the authentic performance of the vast array of small and large Baroque works, such as the great Passions, cantatas and motets of JS Bach, we need a chamber organ. In fact, the Queensland music scene needs a chamber organ, and we plan to make this instrument available to other organisations who wish to use it. We continue to apply for grants from different government and private bodies, but now, we want to take a different direction in this pursuit by inviting our valued supporters to participate directly in this exciting project to bring the first KLOP organ to Queensland. We hope that you will give this appeal its most deserving support.

What is a chamber organ?

A chamber organ is a small, usually portable organ, commonly used to play ‘continuo’ parts. Continuo instruments provide the harmonic framework of the music in the performance of baroque choral and instrumental works. Traditional continuo instruments include the organ, harpsichord and lute which play ‘harmony and the bass line’, and the ‘cello, gamba and violone which double the bass line. Generally, the organ is the most favoured  harmony’ continuo instrument in most sacred works.

Why do we need to have a ‘chamber’ organ? Aren’t organs in churches and concert halls suitable?

The chamber organ continuo player needs to be located within the orchestra or near the choir, in an integrated fashion with the other performers  on stage, as opposed to playing from the console of a larger concert hall or cathedral organ remote from the orchestra and vocalists - these larger  organs are really not an acceptable alternative as they often do not have appropriate “light” speaking pipes appropriate to the style of continuo  accompaniment.

What are the advantages of a KLOP organ in particular?

Klop organs, made by Henk Klop from the Netherlands, are regarded by experts as the best of their type in the world. They have many other features apart from their robust construction and portability. For further detailed information about the specifications, please see http://www.klop.info/en/home.

How much does it cost?

The exact cost will depend upon the number and type of stops (sets of pipes with a particular tone colour) which are chosen for the instrument,  and the current exchange rate, however the approximate cost to purchase a Klop organ is AUD $45,000 – $50,000. ANY amount you can donate to this musical cause will be greatly appreciated. Be part of our mission to enhance early music performance in our part of the world.
