2013 Concert Programme

Good Friday Musical Meditation

Friday 29 March 5:30 pm
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rosalie Corner Fernberg Rd & Given Tce, Paddington
The central work of this concert is the rarely-performed baroque masterpiece Stabat Mater by Domenico Scarlatti, notable for its unusual scoring of 10 voices. In addition, motets by Orlandus Lassus, Carlo Gesualdo and Anton Bruckner will make this a musical feast to remember. Sacred Heart Catholic Church is a remarkable acoustical space and has a wonderful feel.
Repertoire:
  • Domenico Scarlatti: Stabat Mater à 10
  • Bruckner: Christus factus est
  • Lassus: Vide homo (from Tears of St Peter)
  • Gesualdo: Tristis est anima mea
"Scarlatti's setting of the Stabat Mater ... commenced with a vibrant sound, and the addition of continuo, played with great subtlety and complete ensemble between cello and chamber organ. Emily Cox conveyed a long trajectory through this substantial work, with many contrasts, careful management of changes in the use of parts, and some poetic silences. At times her movements connected so fully to the choir's sound that the two were truly indistinguishable. Some sublime placements came through, "Sancta Mater, istud agas, crucifixi..."  just one example."
