Good Friday Musical Meditation

Friday 21 April 2000 6.00 pm
St John's Cathedral, Ann St, Brisbane

Concert 1 in the 2000 Subscription Series
Our annual Good Friday Musical Meditation is a tradition in Brisbane's Holy Week celebrations and in its musical calendar. Passio(Passion according to St. John) by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is the centrepiece of this year's concert. Canticum gave the first Brisbane performance of Passio in our inaugural Good Friday concert. Arvo Pärt's music made a great impression through its power and simplicity. The programme includes a moving arrangement by Sven-David Sandström of Henry Purcell's Hear my prayer, O Lord. Soloists include Michael Strasser as Jesus and Neil Mason as Pilate, with instrumental quartet and Christopher Wrench, organ.

Faire is the Heaven

Sunday 2 July 2000 8.00 pm
St John's Cathedral, Ann St, Brisbane

Great cathedrals have resounded with magnificent music for centuries. In Faire is the Heaven, Canticum will present major works of the 20th-century church music repertoire in partnership with organist Christopher Wrench. Triumphal music will contrast with contemplative settings, with Vaughan Williams' sublime Mass in G minor a special feature. Works include William Harris' Faire is the Heaven, Jonathan Harvey's I Love the Lord, Clare Maclean's Christ the King, and C. H. Parry's I was glad.

Concert 3 in the 2000 Subscription Series
Choral music from around the world features in this celebration of words and music. Poetry and scripture have been the essence of choral music settings for composers of recent centuries. Canticum will present the Australian premiere of Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara's Die erste Elegie, a setting of Rainer Maria Rilke's ode to music, humanity and divinity. Other works include Poulenc's wartime choral cycle Figure Humaine, and the Verdi Pater Noster as well as works by Willan, Kverno, Bruch, Grieg, Rheinberger and Jennefeldt, all to be enjoyed in St Brigid's wonderful acoustic.

Concert, Conviviality and Community

Handel's Messiah (Part I) plus Music for Advent and Christmas
Sunday 26 November 2000 6:00 pm
The Old Museum Concert Hall
Cnr. Gregory Terrace & Bowen Bridge Road, Brisbane

Concert 4 in the 2000 Subscription Series
Margaret Schindler – Soprano
Anne Fulton – Alto
Gregory Massingham – Tenor
Michael Strasser - Bass
Christopher Wrench – Organ

Following the 1999 performance of Britten's Saint Nicolas in the same venue, the tradition of Concert, Conviviality and Community continued. In Concert, an outstanding group of musicians brought Handel's Messiah to life in the lead-up to Christmas. It was a rare opportunity to experience this much-loved work performed by chamber forces, allowing its scintillating detail to emerge. Many of Handel's most memorable and beautiful choruses and solos can be found in Part I.
Conviviality refers to the extended interval, during which patrons were invited to bring their picnic rugs, baskets and bottles for a gastronomic experience at dusk on the lawns.
The musical Community of the evening was then exemplified in combined carol singing. The audience was assisted by the choir and the marvellous pipe organ, originally from St. Stephen's in the city. In between well known carols, some special gems of the Advent and Christmas choral repertoire were also heard.
